A sense of place

Red earth, pale stone and light

Terres Rouges takes its name from the ochre seams that break through the surrounding hills — that vein of red earth visible on the slopes above the olive grove. The mas stands at the top, with no neighbours in sight, facing the ridgeline of the Alpilles massif.

Fully restored, it works with two materials: the blond stone of the walls and the travertine floors, warmed by lime plasters in earth tones. Antique doors, hand-carved and brought back from India, give every threshold the weight of a lived-in place.

One private hectare, a gate, a cypress-lined drive. Trails through the massif start from the estate, and the village of Maussane is a five-minute drive away.

The property

Volumes made for gathering

A 65 sqm living room around the fireplace, a 60 sqm dining room opening onto the terrace, a kitchen of travertine and walnut, and outbuildings that carry the house down to the water's edge.

The living room & fireplace
Heart of the house

The living room & fireplace

Sixty-five square metres beneath a pale timber frame, around a tall stone fireplace. Deep sofas, wool rugs and large steel windows opening onto the pool.

The dining room
Entertaining

The dining room

Around a single-slab table: twelve places, woven-leather chairs and two iron candle chandeliers. The walnut vitrine lines up the china, the kitchen counter adds four more seats, and the steel windows open level with the vine arbour and the ridge of the Alpilles.

The chef's kitchen
Kitchen

The chef's kitchen

A solid travertine island, walnut cabinetry, a range cooker and a built-in wine cellar. Fully equipped: American fridge, ice maker, Nespresso, food processor, juicer.

The summer lounge
Outdoors

The summer lounge

Under the wide roof overhang, sheltered from the midday sun and from the mistral, the terrace opens onto the olive trees and the ridge of the Alpilles. Almond-green metal armchairs, linen sofas, low side tables and an overhead heater for cooler evenings: morning coffee is taken here, the hottest hours are read away here, and the evening runs late as the stone gives back the day's heat.

The Indian doors
Detail

The Indian doors

Brought back from India and carved by hand, the antique doors punctuate the house. Teak panels studded with iron, a fretworked lintel, ring knockers and a stone threshold to step over: the kind of depth no new material can manufacture.

Gym & sauna
Wellness

Gym & sauna

A fully equipped Technogym room — bike, rower, dumbbells, bench, Pilates mat — with a mirrored wall and a tall arched window. The sauna adjoins it.

The pool house & its fire pit
Pool house

The pool house & its fire pit

Under a pergola of antique beams, a large outdoor lounge around a circular fire pit, facing the pool and the line of the Alpilles. Bar, shower and WC adjoining.

The vine arbour & the summer table
Outdoors

The vine arbour & the summer table

A table for twelve under the vines with a spectacular view over the Alpilles, the plancha and the gas barbecue. Beyond, the pétanque court and the table-tennis table.

The 17-metre pool
Pool

The 17-metre pool

Seventeen metres by five, heated, salt-treated, with an electric safety cover and submerged steps. Eight sun loungers, four parasols, four outdoor sofas and the ridge for a horizon.
